Mary’s Voice
Advent reflections to contemplate the coming of Christ
A daily Advent devotional by Dr Amy Orr-Ewing, inviting you to experience Christmas through the eyes of Mary.
Mary had a voice.
We know the Christmas story so well that it can be hard to really hear it. Mary’s Voice invites you to listen again – this time from the perspective of the young woman at its centre.
An ordinary, young, poor woman living under occupation was chosen to play a breakthrough part in the redemption of the world. That was no accident. Her questions, her fears, her courage and her faith all matter – and they have a great deal to say to a weary world that is still waiting for light, peace and love.
Inside the book
Luke drew on Mary as a primary witness for his account of Jesus’ life, so many of the gospel’s most intimate moments are, in a sense, her memories. With Luke as her guide, Amy walks through each day of Advent from Mary’s point of view – a reading from Scripture and a reflection that draws out its biblical resonances and asks who Mary knew her son to be.
Each day is set alongside art from across the centuries, from Fra Angelico, Giotto and Botticelli to Chagall – including an original portrait of Mary by Charlie Mackesy. It is a book to read slowly, alone or together, and to return to every December.
